k.Modeler displays red "X"s; "could not create the view"/"no editor descriptor"

When I open k.Modeler, the integrated development environment displays red x's with the error messages below - "could not create the view"/"no editor descriptor". What's going on, and how can I fix it?

Note that by pressing the "details" button in one of the windows with a red X, more information about the problem will be displayed, which can be very helpful for debugging:

      This is an example of a corrupted download (which hung in the middle of a download and never properly completed). It was fixed by deleting ~/.klab/releases, downloading again, then restarting k.LAB.
